IMATS featuring Kabuki in 2012

Added to the roster of super stars in the industry that will be at IMATS 2012 is Kabuki!! Are you excited?  I am!!

CoverGirl Queen Collection new embassador, Paula Patton

At an incredible dinner at The Source, an Asian fusion restaurant by the prestigious chef Wolfgang Puck in downtown DC, Cover Girl announced to a bunch of savvy bloggeristas and media divas that Paula Patton was the newest Cover Girl Queen Collection ambassador... and get this, gave us the opportunity to chat with her!
She glowed and beamed with pride!  She told us how she was ecstatic to represent the brand, one that offers cosmetics for women of color.
She shared that her routine has shortened because of her little bundle of joy, but getting back into glam mode she uses her Cover Girl to polish her look.  Her makeup artist, Fiona Styles, dished via twitter (@fionastiles) that she uses Cover Girl Queen Collection Mineral Bronzer for her fabulous glow.  You all know how much I rave about that bronzer, right?
She was also very excited to talk to us about the new products that Cover Girl will be launching early next year: Natural Hue Matte Pressed Powder to keep oilies at bay, Vivid Impact Eyeliner-- metallic, jewel toned goodness and LashFanatic Mascara for incredible lashes.
Me and Paula.. yes she's as pretty, bright and bubbly as you think! ;)

I have a few of the new products to test, so of course I'll let you all know how that goes!

IMATS 2011: Red Carpet Makeup with Valente Frazier

LinkMany knowledgeable, fantastic celebrity makeup artists were attendance at IMATS (Eve Pearl, Adrien Morot, Kevin James Bennett, and Linda Mason to name a few), but one I was excited about seeing and meeting was Valente Frazier! Makeup artist to Tyra Banks and others, this artist possess knowledge, poise and just a charm that you'll fall in love with! (Part of the artist is talent, but attitude and demeanor also speaks volumes to your craft!)

Valente took us through the process of the classic smokey eye with Q&A while he worked. Here are some tid-bits I picked up:
  • He uses RCMA foundation for great coverage and blendability.
  • He uses YSL and Laura Mercier powders for their finely milled formulas.
  • He likes bronzers from Kiko- an Italian makeup line.
  • He created a classic smokey eye with MAC Smoulder liner and a bronze Dior quint, smudging liner with a pencil brush.
  • He highlighted and contoured with cream (his RCMA foundation palette).
  • He likes Roque Cozette synthetic brushes.
  • A key component to red carpet makeup is to select a focal point of the face and focus on that special feature.
  • Another tip for long lasting red carpet lip color is to use Jello powder as a lip stain.
  • He doesn't believe in the ultra sculpted brow, but a nice manicured brow.
  • His work time: 1 hour! (by my clock)

What a gorgeous look! She's a natural beauty anyway. I hope you guys enjoyed my IMATS posts. I hope to see you at IMATS next year!

Bending the Cosmos

You guys, this has to be one of my most proudest shoots to date. It's simple, classy, full of color, classic, edgy, bold, vintage... so me! We had plenty of challenges facing us the day of shoot, but the end results are stunning and fab (if I do say so myself)! I loved our team and the outfits... the shoes (I ordered the red pair).. that red lip-- beet liner filled and shaded in, a dark liner like MAC's chestnut or night moth to contour the lips and a sheer dark purple gloss to add some shiny depth. The smokey winged liner and shadow to dress up the model's beautiful shaped eyes... I'm in love!

Random shoot info:
-The model is under age, but performed like a pro!
-The shoot was canceled Saturday night around 11:00pm, but was on again in the wee hours of Sunday morn
-Stylist Victor Price was a former NARS regional cosmetic director
-These wardrobe and other similar items can be found at Junction.
-The owner of Junction, Shannan was on set styling and she's as lovely as they come!

I usually have the behind the scenes shots for you first, but I got finished(?) photos first, LOL

How did we do, family?

My latest beauty indulgence: Beauty Podcasts!

Downloading beauty chat to hear when I'm commuting or on the go, is sooo refreshing! It definitely gives me more stimulation than the 5 records that are abused on public radio (or the same 200+ songs on my iPod). I love uploading fresh content from iTunes when I need something new! Yes, free beauty chat from experts and industry insiders when I want! It's fab! You can listen to recorded shows right from the blogtalk radio site or my favorite, a podcast from iTunes.

Downside: Illusions Beauty creators Janice and Denise are the only ones I've found, really talking BEAUTY! If you guys know of any more, please let me know. One more thing, the topics get interesting and you can't comment or join in the discussion, LOL!

How to download podcasts to your iPod.

Do you download podcasts? Which shows?

P.s. Can I be real with you guys? When you get into the podcasts, don't just listen to the interviews and chats with big names like Sam Fine and Valente Frazier. You truly learn from all of the chats. So one by one, click and listen!

Check this out! Angela and Vanessa Cover FashizBlack Mag

OK so I'm strolling TheYBF... I see some new stuff from some of my fave chicks Angela and Vanessa, sister duo and swaying to the Rihanna in background when I hit the 00:34 mark.....

....then the 00:46 mark hits and I scream!

Who's doing their 'celebrity makeup' artistry but Miss Risa! Check out our pic together here from The Makeup Show 2010. How cool is that? I love recognizing people, knowing people in the 'industry' and know that they are real artists with a passion for their craft doing what they love. Seeing that makes me feel like a part of me made it too...

Edit: Well, I checked her blog and she tells you all about the experience! Risa's Blog

Leopard Face for Avartsy!

Back when I did this Exotic Shoot with a feline theme, my original idea (the look in the above pic) didn't make the cut. I was debating whether or not to show you guys this as it would have been better presented, done over a bit more neatly with full face makeup, a real camera and not the cell phone pic, etc. Ehh well, you guys get to see the rough draft. This is for you Avartsy! It's waaayyy beyond Easter, hahaha! ;) Love ya girl!

The Makeup Show Part2: Brand and Product Edition

Here are some brands and products that caught my eye this year at The Makeup Show NYC 2010. Read on for another pic heavy post of cosmetic goodness! Check out last year's posts as many of the same brands were present this year at the show. Want to see my Part1: Blogger Edition?

PAPERSELF Lashes! The most adorable thing and so my thing. I bought a pair and can't wait to wear them. Afraid of the durability though ;(

Up close! Cute right?

The three adorable chicas that repped the brand at the show, all wearing the ultra cute, unique lashes!

Linda Mason Elements-- bringing art back to makeup! I'm so enamoured by her whimsical and quirky art sense. It makes me feel artsy fartsy about my makeup tools! Next trip to NY, I have to take a trip to her boutique. This is the ultimate merger between my love of makeup and my first inspiration, my dad's art!
Look at those colorful brushes! (...and the brush belt, t-shirt and cases!)

Toni swatched some of the shadows to check for pigmentation.. bold, water color? Nice!

The Linda Mason team at the show... Yup, that's Linda Mason on the right!

Dinar Airbrush-- look at the cool creations they were making at the show: sparkly, neon leopard hair

Neon airbrush temporary tattoos

Flawless beauty makeup

I wish I would have inquired as to what brand did her FX make up, alas I didn't. Walking through the crowds of people were creations like these.. freaky! Snap a pic! lol!

Again, I don't know what brand created this body art, but look at her face! Just like a painting! Incredible!

MAC Cosmetics was creating this piece..

as well as this one.

Another work of art by Cosmix (thanks to the identifying name tag! lol), walking around amongst the normal. It totally catches you off guard!

Melissa of CoverFX talks to Toni about one their latest product, The Big Cover Up. It's sold out on HSN! It's an awesome little compact, a 5 in 1-- foundation, contour, highlight and setting powder with a handy mirror. Oh such a Go Mommy Go item as well as a great introductory item to CoverFX! Can't wait to get my hands on this! I'm always looking for ways to down size my makeup bag!

Eve Pearl was at the show working her magic. Fans crowded around and filiming took place.. a star was in the building!

Makeup Designory had a mini makeover going on... the artist used a brush and brow pencil to fill brows.. genius! I brush my liner for eye liner, but never thought to use the concept in my brows. I love it!

Cinema Secrets eye shadow palette, lip color palette, concealers and more!

Three Custom Color Specialist's display. They can whip up a custom creation or choose from their expertly blended and ready to purchase products. Their special product of the day was their 5 full coverage lipstick colors.
So many things to choose from and more, stay tuned to find out what products came in on my Top 3 Products list from The Makeup Show!

Essence and Johnson & Johnson's What's Your Beauty Secret Event

Recently, I attended an Essence and Johnson & Johnson for WEEN event hosted by Mikki Taylor. Over a tasty brunch (with mimosas!) we got to hear expert answers and discussion on skincare and beauty for women of color. The panel of experts included Dr. Cheryll Burgess, Tia Dantzler, JoElle Lyons and Derrick Rutledge.

Some great tips I took away from the panel discussion:
  • Don't spray your perfume on your neck; the alcohol in it can contribute to dryness and wrinkles.

  • "Eliminate" regularly to help skin issues.

  • Continue your skincare regimen down your neck, even on your hands.

  • Use skincare with Vitamin C and Retinol A in its ingredients.

  • Botox injections is a beauty treatment increasing in popularity amongst African American women.

  • Everything natural and organic isn't good.

  • Concealer and mascara are two products that will brighten your face, even on natural days.

  • Keep skin supple and soft by applying Johnson & Johnson's baby oil right out of the shower.

More tips were shared as well as laughs! I'll be sure to share more in upcoming posts. At the end of the discussion, Johnson & Johnson donated $5,000 to WEEN to continue efforts empowering women!

Before we left, Toni and I got a picture with DC celebrity makeup artist and legend, Derrick Rutledge. Derrick has embarked on two new exciting ventures and we are excited to have gotten the news: 1. HE IS FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA'S MAKEUP ARTIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sooooo excited for Derrick and 2. He's currently working on his own makeup line. I asked him about some recent celebs that he's made up and the products he used to help make them sparkle on the red carpet..? The answer? He's been test driving his new products, so we'll have to wait and see! Did I say I was really excited?

Here's my look from the days events. Derrick told me he could see my makeup from the stage and it looked nice. ;) *ting!*

Have you ever attended a WEEN or Essence event? What's your favorite use of a Johnson and Johnson product?

*I attended the event thanks to Essence and Johnson and Johnson/B-Link!
